So I have a midnight blue 993 Porsche (last of the air cooled...ahhhhhh) and am stuck....wondering whether to start a project converting it to an EV OR do I get myself a cheaper one like a 986 (Boxster) and work on that instead....I am leaning towards keeping the 993 as stock as it's just such a beautiful car but I need a project as COVID is killing me....🤣
Other thoughts are something like a Lotus Elise - although the framework might be a bitch to work with.
Any thoughts on this would be much appreciated
Ooo warm blanket, nice. I was looking last night at costings and if i bought an MR2 MK2, lets say for £1500, you can get a conversion kit for £5500 from EV West in the US, plus delivery (I'll add the conversion kit links for US / EU companies in parts for sale this weekend). Having the kit, although adding to the cost, should make things easier rather than piecing it together. Then you just need to source the batteries. I didn't look to see how many or the power you need yet, but its about £120 to £150 for 1 KW of used (Nissan Leaf) batties on ebay and i recon you need at least 20 to 30, so say £4k to be on the safe side. Then fitting cost. I haven't explored the cost of making it road legal yet, although I know Adrian flux do insure them. My issue is doing the battery and wiring, so all of it 🤣🤣. So about £11k plus fitting cost if needed, import duty, minus selling any bits off the donor ( MR2, engine, exhaust, etc). I could be wrong though lol It would be great to know how realistic I am, if anyone with experience can comment. 👍
Not got any pics since the detailing as its been garaged under a warm blanket since... Wont be doing the conversion myself - budget would be tighter if i bought a second car and kept the 993 but not too bad otherwise.
How about you? You building your yourself?
HI RUF Life, How funny, I'm in a similar boat. As i have a TVR Griff 500 and converting that with the right quality and power would cost a hell of a lot. Also it would loose alot of character without the V8. Your 993 air cooled sounds tasty, got any pics? There does seem to be alot of kits coming out for early Porsche from a few companies. I will finish off the list of kits that companies do that I started in the for sale section tonight. Going for a more cost effective EV solution is also something i am pondering as well, like an MR2 or TVR wedge. Cheaper to buy and not so bad if you get it wrong. At the moment though I don't have the space, thats my first challenge. Whats the budget and can you do the conversion yourself, then I will assist from there?
